Hidden Ottoman Era Structure Uncovered After Earthquake

Recent earthquakes in Tokat’s Sulusaray district revealed a historical gem hidden within the old Quran course belonging to the District Mufti’s Office. The removal of plaster following the tremors exposed a structure dating back to the Ottoman period, initially mistaken for a fountain and later identified as the entrance to the Quran course.

The earthquakes, ranging from magnitudes 4.7 to 5.6 on April 18, caused damage to some buildings but also unveiled this historical entrance, known locally as Çeşme. Ahmet Demir, the Buğdaylı village headman, clarified that the structure was not a fountain but the primary entrance to the building, likely constructed around 1313 according to the old calendar. Demir emphasized the importance of preserving and restoring this significant piece of history for future generations.
