British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who held a surprise press statement at Downing Street, where the Prime Minister’s Office is located in London, England, said that he met with his majesty the King and requested the dissolution of the Parliament and that his request was accepted. According to Sunak, a general election will be held on July 4.
Sunak’s early election announcement came after inflation in the UK fell to its lowest level in the last three years in April, falling to 2.3 percent.
Countries in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group have committed over €21 billion in new military aid, British Defense Secretary John Healey announced after a meeting in Brussels co-chaired by Germany and the UK. The UK pledged a record £4.5 billion for 2024, including drones and anti-tank mines. Germany pledged €11 billion through 2029, with plans to deliver air defense systems, tanks, and ammunition. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov thanked allies and stressed the importance of continued support against Russia’s increasing drone attacks.
