Cyril Ramaphosa, the candidate of the African National Congress, who lost his parliamentary majority after 30 years following the general election held on May 29 in South Africa, which will be governed by a coalition government for the first time, was re-elected as president by the vote of the National Assembly.

In South Africa, the head of state is not elected by the people, but by simple majority voting in the National Assembly. Parties gain seats in the parliament according to the rate of votes they receive, and MPs elect the president after the election.

Budapest Hosts Turkic States Summit

Budapest is set to host the Organization of Turkic States (TDT) Informal Summit on May 20–21, marking the first time a country with observer status, Hungary, will host the event. The city has been decorated with TDT flags ahead of the summit, which will take place at the historic Varkert Bazar near the Danube.

Leaders from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Hungary are expected to attend. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will also hold bilateral talks during his visit.

The summit will focus on deepening strategic cooperation among Turkic states, with discussions on economic ties, security, and cultural heritage. The event will conclude with the adoption of the Budapest Declaration.
