Quarantine Island, established in Izmir’s Urla district during the Ottoman era to combat infectious diseases, offers visitors a glimpse into history. The island, featuring original materials from centuries ago, underwent its first restoration in 155 years. The meticulous project, costing approximately 80 million TL ($2,430,000) and spanning three years, aimed to preserve the island’s historical integrity.
Located on a 323-decare area and protected as a first-degree archaeological site, the restoration was managed by Türkiye’s Ministry of Health and the General Directorate of Health for Borders and Coasts. Experts ensured that no concrete or modern materials were used, maintaining the authenticity of the heirloom buildings.
Quarantine Island, once utilized during the recent coronavirus pandemic, reopened for group visits by appointment only at the end of 2023. Individual access remains restricted.
