Juan Jose Zuniga, the military commander behind a failed coup attempt in Bolivia, has been detained. Acting on the chief prosecutor’s request, authorities also detained former Vice Admiral Juan Arnez Salvador. Government Minister Eduardo del Castillo confirmed the arrests, stating, “The aim of this group was to overthrow the democratically elected authority. Now everything is under control.”
Justice Minister Ivan Lima announced that prosecutors will seek a 15-20 year prison sentence for Zuniga for his actions against democracy and the Constitution. Lima dismissed Zuniga’s claims that President Arce had orchestrated the situation to boost his popularity, asserting that Zuniga was merely trying to justify his actions.
