Ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) in Israel took to the streets after the Supreme Court removed the law that exempts them from compulsory military service. Thousands of Haredim gathered in Jerusalem yesterday and blocked the roads with banners that read, “We would die, but not join the military,” and “Israel is not a Jewish state; it is a Zionist state,” and set fires. Five people were detained for attacking police during the protest.
Haredim, who have been exempt from compulsory military service since the founding of Israel, believe that military service is incompatible with their lifestyle.
