Maltese Robert Metsola, the European People’s Party candidate, was re-elected as European Parliament’s president by receiving 562 votes out of 669 deputies in the voting, which was held during the first session of the new legislative period.
“I feel grateful and humbled by the trust that members of parliament have shown in me. I will continue to advocate for a strong European Parliament for a strong Europe. I will work to bring change and build bridges to the power source of our legislation and politics,” said the 45-year-old democrat.
Metsola’s only opponent, former Spanish Minister of Equality Irene Montero from the leftist group, received 61 votes.
