Japan’s Kishida To Resign in September

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has announced that in September he will step down as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, which became the country’s agenda with corruption allegations.

“Politics cannot function without public trust. I will now focus on supporting the newly elected leader as a member of the party,” Kishida said at the press conference where he announced his resignation.

Kishida’s resignation will prompt a search for a new prime minister in Japan, and the new LDP leader will have to contend with unifying the government, rising costs of living, rising geopolitical tensions with China, and the possibility of the re-election of former US President Donald Trump in the November elections.
