In the northern island nation of Haiti, inmates who staged a protest in a prison in the town of Saint-Marc escaped from the prison. Eleven of the escapees lost their lives when police intervened with guns and the prison was taken under control again.

Authorities said locals should be on the alert for escaped prisoners.

Last year, 185 prisoners died in Haitian prisons and it was stated that most of the deaths were due to diseases related to malnutrition.

At least 26 people have died after Typhoon Kalmaegi struck the central Philippines, most of them in Cebu province. Governor Pamela Baricuatro described the flooding as “truly devastating,” saying residents were caught off guard by rising waters. Many people climbed onto rooftops to await rescue as streets turned into rivers. The storm is now heading toward central Vietnam, with scientists warning that climate change is intensifying such extreme weather events.
