The tension between the US and Venezuela, which has been rising since President Nicolas Maduro’s re-election, has reached a new level. US Attorney General Merrick Garland announced that the Dassault Falcon 900EX aircraft that Maduro uses for international visits has been seized in the Dominican Republic as it was illegally purchased for $13 million through a front company and smuggled out of the US “for use by Nicolas Maduro and his cronies.”
“Let this seizure send a clear message: aircraft illegally acquired from the United States for the benefit of sanctioned Venezuelan officials cannot just fly off into the sunset,” said Matthew Axelrod, Assistant Secretary of Export Enforcement at the US Department of Commerce.
