Mexican soldiers opened fire on a pickup truck carrying 33 illegal immigrants, consisting of Egyptian, Nepali, Cuban, Indian and Pakistani citizens, trying to cross into the US in the state of Chiapas, approximately 40 kilometers north of the Guatemala border, on Tuesday evening. Six immigrants were killed and 10 more were injured, the Mexican Ministry of Defense reported.
Mexican police stated that the pickup was followed after not stopping at a military checkpoint, and fire was opened to stop the vehicle, also mentioning that the pickup driver drove onto dirt ground to escape but lost control of the vehicle.
The soldiers are suspended from duty until the investigation is completed.
