Protesters in Tirana Clash with Police Over Opposition Arrests

In Albania’s capital, Tirana, opposition protesters clashed with police, throwing Molotov cocktails at government buildings, including the Prime Ministry and parliament. The violence erupted during a demonstration organized by the Democratic Party (PD), demanding the release of jailed MP Ervin Salianji and protesting the house arrest of PD leader Sali Berisha.

The protesters accused Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government of corruption and called for his resignation, chanting “Destroy the dictatorship.” Police dispersed the crowd with tear gas, and 10 officers were injured. The US Embassy advised citizens to avoid the area, while PD’s Flamur Noka vowed that “civil disobedience will continue.”

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar strongly responded to Greek Cypriot criticism of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s planned May 3 visit to the TRNC, calling the remarks “nonsense” and asking, “Who are you to criticize my President?” Speaking at an economic meeting with Turkish tradesmen in Kyrenia, Tatar emphasized Türkiye’s historic and ongoing support for Turkish Cypriots. He rejected Greek Cypriot calls for a federal solution and said Türkiye’s presence secures Turkish Cypriot rights in the region.
