Nobel Prize in Physics 2024 Awarded for Advances in Machine Learning

The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to John Hopfield from Princeton University, USA, and Geoffrey Hinton from the University of Toronto, Canada, for their groundbreaking work on artificial neural networks, which enabled modern machine learning.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences recognized Hopfield, 91, and Hinton, 76, for their discoveries that revolutionized science, engineering, and daily life through machine learning. Hopfield’s work on relational memory helped store and reconstruct data patterns, while Hinton, known as the “father of artificial intelligence,” developed methods to autonomously identify features in data. The two laureates will share a prize of 11 million Swedish Krona (around $1.1 million).
