Cyprus Leaders to Meet Again Amid UN Efforts

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides in New York to discuss the Cyprus issue. Following the meeting, Tatar announced that the next session will involve Türkiye and Greece, broadening the discussions.

Guterres expressed disappointment that no common ground has been found between the two sides despite ongoing efforts. He urged both leaders to bridge their differences and rebuild trust to advance peace talks. While no significant breakthrough occurred, an informal extended meeting is planned, and the two leaders agreed to discuss opening new border crossings in Cyprus.

Tatar emphasized that any negotiation must respect the sovereign equality of Turkish Cypriots, noting that a federal solution is no longer viable. He reiterated that the rights of Turkish Cypriots are rooted in Cyprus’ history and the 1960 agreements.
