Historic Erzurum Congress Building Draws Hundreds

The Erzurum Congress Building, famed for hosting the pivotal 1919 congress in Türkiye’s National Struggle, continues to attract hundreds of visitors each day. The congress, remembered for Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s words, “History will undoubtedly record this congress as a rare and great work,” was a milestone in Türkiye’s journey toward independence. Originally built in 1864 as Sanasaryan College, the building has a rich history, later serving as Gazi Primary School and various high schools. In 1960, it became the Atatürk and Erzurum Congress Museum. Restored between 2011-2013, it now operates under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism as the Erzurum Painting and Sculpture Museum, preserving the legacy of the congress and the spirit of the National Struggle.
