BYD Factory Sparks “Chinatown” Excitement in Türkiye’s Manisa

Plans for a “Chinese Street,” not a full “Chinatown,” near the upcoming BYD automotive factory in Manisa, Türkiye, have sparked excitement among locals. The project, expected to bring 2,500 Chinese workers to the area, aims to integrate workers into the local culture while providing facilities for food, drink, and social activities.

Manisa Mayor Ferdi Zeyrek emphasized the desire for cultural and economic synergy, stating, “I want our Chinese brothers and sisters to embrace Manisa’s culture and contribute to its economy.”

The $1 billion BYD factory in the Manisa Organized Industrial Zone will begin operations in 2026, producing 150,000 electric vehicles annually and creating up to 20,000 jobs, including sub-industries. Locals view the arrival of Chinese workers as an opportunity for cultural exchange and economic benefits. Akgedik neighborhood headman Semih Kurşunlu noted the potential advantages while expressing hopes that the workers invest locally rather than only meeting basic needs.
