Numerous people in Athens, the capital of Greece, marched in memory of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, who was killed by police during a protest in 2008 at the age of 15. Some protesters set fire to garbage bins in the Exarchia district where the boy was killed and threw Molotov cocktails and rocks at police, causing tensions between protesters and police to escalate. Athens police arrested 66 people.
The police officer responsible for Grigoropoulos’ shooting was sentenced to life in prison in 2010, but was released in 2019 after his sentence was reduced.
