Grave of Hafez al-Assad Damaged in Syria

Opposition groups in Syria have vandalized the grave of former President Hafez al-Assad in Qardaha, Latakia. Hafez, who led the country from 1971 until his death in 2000, was buried in his hometown. Hafez’s son, Bashar al-Assad, succeeded him as president after his death on June 10, 2000.
