Excavations near the Yamula Dam in Kayseri, Türkiye, have uncovered fossils dating back 7.5 million years, revealing the richest fossil diversity in Anatolia. Supported by the Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality, these studies have unearthed remains of ancient horses, rhinoceroses, elephants, giraffes, and more.
The discoveries highlight the region’s transformation into a grassland-savana ecosystem during the Late Miocene period. Restoration efforts on key specimens, including a complete pig skull and elephant remains, are ongoing. These findings position the Yamula fossil sites as a significant paleontological hub, attracting international attention.
