Cyclone Chido has caused severe destruction in Mozambique and France’s Mayotte Island, leaving at least 63 dead across the region.
In Mozambique, the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management reported 34 deaths, 319 injuries, and over 174,000 people affected. More than 5,000 homes were destroyed, with relief and damage assessment efforts ongoing.
On Mayotte Island, the death toll has risen to 22, with over 1,400 injured. Mayor Ambdilwahedou Soumaila highlighted urgent needs for water, food, and electricity, warning of sanitation risks as bodies decompose in inaccessible areas. A nightly curfew has been imposed, and 20 tons of supplies are being delivered to the island.
In neighboring Malawi, authorities confirmed seven deaths linked to the cyclone. Rescue efforts continue across the affected areas as teams search for survivors amid widespread devastation.
