Turks Return to Khalid-i Baghdadi’s Tomb After 14 Years in Syria

For the first time in 14 years, Turks visited the tomb of Islamic scholar Mevlana Khalid-i Baghdadi in Damascus, Syria, following the fall of the Assad regime.

The tomb, located at the foot of Mount Qasiyun, is maintained by Zekeriya Vanlı, 85, whose family has cared for it for over a century. Restored by a Turkish foundation in 2009, the site had been inaccessible to Turkish visitors since 2010 due to Syria’s internal conflict.

Vanlı expressed his joy at seeing visitors again, saying, “No Turks have come here since 2010. My family has maintained this tomb for generations. We are very happy now.”

Mevlana Khalid-i Baghdadi, a prominent 19th-century Sufi scholar, remains an important figure in the Islamic world, known for his contributions to theology and jurisprudence.
