Oil Spill in Kerch Strait After Russian Tanker Splits in Two

An oil spill occurred on December 15 after the Russian tanker Volgoneft 212 split in two during a storm in the Kerch Strait, connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Over 4 tons of oil leaked into the Black Sea, polluting the coasts of Anapa, Veselovka, and Blagoveshchenskaya in Russia’s Krasnodar Region, causing significant harm to wildlife, including the deaths of birds and dolphins.

The Russian Emergencies Ministry deployed 400 personnel and 60 vehicles to clean the 4.2-kilometer contaminated area. Volunteers joined the efforts to mitigate the damage. Russian President Vladimir Putin assured the public that steps are being taken to address the disaster and restore the affected areas.

The tanker’s breakup, caused by severe weather, also impacted the Volgoneft-239. While 28 crew members were rescued, one sailor lost his life in the incident.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the recent peace talks in Istanbul have brought a new dimension to diplomatic efforts on Ukraine and proposed a leaders’ summit hosted by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. “A summit with leaders from Russia, Ukraine, and the US could help achieve a long-term ceasefire,” he said.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, stating that President Erdoğan has been working actively since the war began. He added that talks in Istanbul on May 16 led to concrete results, including a prisoner swap.

Fidan shared insights from his prior visit to Moscow and said Russia is open to further talks on June 2. He stressed the importance of continuing momentum and involving international actors to build common ground for peace.

Fidan is also scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Andriy Yermak, Rustem Umerov, and representatives of the Crimean Tatar and Gagauz Turkish communities.
