Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico visited Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the year-end expiration of Slovakia’s gas transit agreement with Gazprom. The one-on-one meeting focused on ensuring Russian gas shipments to Slovakia and broader discussions on Ukraine’s military situation and prospects for peace.
Fico criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for opposing gas transit via Ukraine and supporting sanctions on Russia’s nuclear program, accusing him of harming Slovakia’s energy sector. Fico stated that EU officials were informed about his visit and emphasized Slovakia’s efforts to normalize ties with Russia.
