Following clashes between Bashar Assad loyalists and opposition groups in the Syrian capital Damascus last night, 14 police officers were killed and 10 were injured in an ambush attack by Assad loyalists in the Tartus countryside, according to the Syrian Ministry of Interior.

The ministry, which is affiliated with the interim administration, stated that anyone who dared to undermine the country’s security or endanger the lives of Syrians would be responded harshly.

Syrians took to the streets in Tartus, Latakia and Homs yesterday after footage of an attack on Alawite shrine, detected to be taken in Aleppo in November, was circulated on social media. Following the protests, a one-night curfew was declared in Homs.

US Flag Raised Again at Embassy in Damascus After 12 Year

The US flag has been hoisted once more at the US Embassy in Damascus, Syria, for the first time since its closure in 2012.

US Special Representative for Syria Thomas Barrack made his first official visit to Damascus and personally raised the flag during a ceremony attended by Syrian Foreign Minister Assad Hassan Shaybani. The embassy had suspended operations amid the outbreak of civil conflict following anti-government protests.

No official statement has been issued regarding the resumption of embassy operations.

The move follows a surprise meeting earlier this month between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara in Riyadh, where a decision was made to lift sanctions imposed during the Assad era, signaling a potential shift in Washington-Damascus relations.
