A violent prison riot in Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, led to the escape of 1,534 inmates, leaving at least 33 dead and 15 injured during clashes outside the facility. Police Chief Bernardino Rafael confirmed that anti-government protests over the recent presidential election triggered the unrest.

During the riot, prisoners overpowered guards, seizing weapons to facilitate their escape. Authorities have recaptured 150 inmates but anticipate a surge in crime within 48 hours. Two additional prisons also reported attempted breakouts.

Mozambique has been gripped by violence following the October 9 election, where Daniel Chapo of FRELIMO claimed victory with 65% of the vote. Allegations of electoral fraud by opposition supporters have fueled protests, raising the death toll from related clashes to 151.

Lebanon Targets Full State Control of Arms by 2026

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced plans to bring all weapons under state authority by the end of 2025, including those held by Hezbollah. In an interview during his visit to Qatar, Aoun emphasized dialogue over conflict, stating, “We do not want a civil war in Lebanon.”

Aoun said direct talks are ongoing with Hezbollah and praised the group’s cooperation in southern Lebanon under UN Resolution 1701. He noted that the Lebanese army has closed tunnels and destroyed arms depots linked to Hezbollah.

He also called on the U.S. to pressure Israel to withdraw from occupied areas and end attacks on Lebanese soil, arguing that such actions undermine disarmament efforts.

Aoun added that Hezbollah fighters meeting military criteria could integrate into the national army, as done after the Lebanese civil war.
