Pope Francis is set to visit Iznik, Türkiye, in May to commemorate the anniversary of the First Council of Iznik. His first stop will be the Iznik Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, a site of historical and cultural significance. This announcement has spurred a surge in tourism to the district, with preparations underway to accommodate increased visitors.
Former Iznik Museum Director Taylan Sevil remarked, “Our district is rich in cultural assets. Pope Francis’ visit will spotlight İznik globally, bringing significant benefits to tourism and the local economy.”
Located on UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List, Iznik is renowned for its Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman heritage. Alongside the Hagia Sophia Mosque, the city’s ancient walls, theater, and historical baths attract thousands of visitors annually.
