Thousands Protest during Voting of Censure Motion over Deadly Train Crash in Greece

Thousands of people in Greece have protested in front of the Greek parliament during voting of opposition parties’ censure motion against Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ government over the train crash in 2023 that killed 57 people, mostly university students.

Demanding justice for those who lost their lives in the train crash, the crowd threw tear gas and flares outside the parliament building. To disperse the crowd, security forces used tear gas and water cannons.

Athens police announced that 61 people were detained and 7 arrested following the clashes.

A violent protest also took place in the northern city of Thessaloniki, resulting in the detention of 30 people.

The motion was rejected with 136 MPs supporting it and 157 against it.
