Powerful winds and severe floods triggered by Cyclone Alfred resulted in serious property damage and the death of a person in the eastern states of Australia.
Authorities reported that one person drowned after being swept away by floodwaters in northern New South Wales, while two Australian Defence Force vehicles were involved in a collision on their way to help residents in Lismore, injuring several officers.
In Queensland, energy distributor Energex reported that 428,540 people were without power in the state’s southeast.
“Heavy rain and winds are expected to continue in the coming days,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said.
