Pakistan Struggles to Contain Underground Well Fire

A fire that erupted during drilling in a 1,200-meter-deep well in Korangi Creek, Karachi, on March 29 remains uncontrolled after eight days.

Authorities paused extinguishing efforts due to extreme heat and reported dangerous chemicals—benzene, toluene, and tetrachloroethane—in water samples. Fire officials warned that trapped underground gases are fueling the blaze and increasing the risk of further escalation.
