A nationwide strike in Belgium over planned government cuts to unemployment and retirement benefits halted air travel and public transport.
Called by socialist and Christian unions, the one-day general strike affected cities including Brussels, Liege, and Antwerp. All departures at Brussels Airport were canceled, while Charleroi Airport suspended all flights. Public transit, postal services, hospitals, and Eurostar trains were also disrupted.
In Brussels, 4,000 protesters left a symbolic black coffin at the ruling N-VA party’s HQ in response to austerity measures introduced by the right-wing coalition government.
