Syria Pledges Unity and Invites Global Investment

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa vowed that Syria would remain united and peaceful, rejecting any return to the old regime’s divisive narratives. In a national address, al-Sharaa emphasized, “We will not allow Syria to be divided.”

He thanked Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and other regional leaders for their support and praised the lifting of international sanctions as a “bold and historic step.” Al-Sharaa noted growing international recognition of Syria’s new leadership, including support from France, Germany, and the UK.

Calling for global involvement in reconstruction, al-Sharaa invited investors from Arab nations, Türkiye, and beyond to participate in Syria’s recovery, pledging reforms, security, and openness.

He also highlighted progress in forming new institutions, integrating armed factions, and restoring diplomatic ties. “Syria is ready to rebuild and embrace all who extend a hand in peace,” he said.

EU Warns US Tariffs Could Trigger De Facto Trade Ban

0

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic warned that a proposed 30% US tariff on European goods would effectively amount to a trade ban, severely disrupting transatlantic supply chains.

Speaking ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, Sefcovic expressed disappointment over a letter from US President Donald Trump that halted expected trade progress. “We were close to an agreement,” he said, but now “must prepare for all outcomes.”

The EU has delayed retaliatory measures on $72 billion worth of US goods until August 1, hoping for a negotiated resolution. Sefcovic emphasized that “no one wants a trade war,” while France urged faster preparation for countermeasures and Hungary blamed the EU Commission’s weak response to US pressure.

Danish and Lithuanian ministers echoed calls to avoid escalation but emphasized EU readiness to defend its interests.
