Nicusor Dan Sworn In as Romania’s New President

Pro-EU and NATO-backed politician Nicusor Dan officially took office as Romania’s president after winning the May 18 election. In his speech, Dan promised economic reform, public accountability, and continued Western alignment. “The Romanian state needs a radical change,” he said, calling on citizens to apply “constructive pressure” on institutions.

Dan also vowed to maintain support for Ukraine and ensure financial stability, warning against overspending. “Sending a message of openness and predictability to investors is in our national interest,” he said.

The 55-year-old mathematician must now nominate a prime minister to form a new government. Romania’s presidency carries key influence over national security and foreign policy.

Dan won 53.6% in the runoff, defeating far-right candidate George Simion. The election followed the annulment of last year’s vote due to confirmed Russian interference.
