Thousands of Japanese celebrated the ‘Coming of Age Day’, where 20 year-olds are congratulated and encouraged for reaching the age of maturity. People flocked to Tokyo’s historical district Asakusa, wearing traditional Japanese kimonos. Sayaka Haneda, 20, stated that she has been waiting for this day for years and said, “Japanese come to this region wearing kimono on this very important day for them. I wanted to take pictures in this famous region in accordance with tradition.” Mizuki Yoshino, who stated that she got up early in the morning and prepared her kimono, which is very difficult to wear, said, “It took more than half an hour to put on the kimono. But I think it’s worth it.”
Coming of Age Day holds annually as official holiday on the second Monday of January since 1948 in Japan.
