German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is ready to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging Moscow to accept the offer. “If the Russian side does not take this step, more pressure will need to be applied. The EU is working on other sanctions,” Merz said after talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Berlin.
Merz noted that if no bilateral meeting takes place, a trilateral meeting involving US President Donald Trump, Putin, and Zelenskyy could follow. Carney confirmed Zelenskyy’s willingness to meet at a neutral location and stressed the need to strengthen Ukraine’s military while pressuring Russia.
Merz also stated Germany will not support recognizing Palestine as a state. The leaders discussed boosting defense cooperation, energy supply diversification, and strengthening trade ties between Germany and Canada.
