Kyrgyz President Sadr Japarov officially launched underground production at the state-owned Kumtor gold mine, shifting from open-pit mining. He said the move will protect glaciers and extend the mine’s life by up to 50 years.
Japarov noted that 1,600 meters of tunnels have been excavated, with reserves of 147 tons of gold recorded. Since nationalization in 2022, Kumtor has generated $3.4 billion in revenue and $891 million in budget payments.
