The earthquakes that struck Afghanistan last week, killing 2,205 people and injuring 3,640, have left locals in panic. Fearing new tremors, residents are abandoning their homes and migrating to safer regions.
Ghulam Sayeed from Darai Nur, Nangarhar, where 255 people died, said, “This earthquake has been going on for 10 days. Houses collapsed. People, children, women, and even I are experiencing mental and emotional distress.”
Another resident, Nader Khan, who lost his child, said, “There is no shelter or food left here. Houses have collapsed. Some people fled the city, and the earthquake is still ongoing.”
Authorities said damaged roads hindered rescue and aid, prompting helicopters to transport the injured and deliver supplies. Local official Ibrahim Saifullah stated that Islamic Emirate teams had mobilized by air and land to respond in Kunar, Darai Nur, and other disaster-hit areas.
