France’s Prime Minister François Bayrou lost a confidence vote in parliament, forcing his government to fall. The National Assembly voted 364 to 194 against him, with 15 abstentions. Bayrou is expected to resign to President Emmanuel Macron, who will name a new prime minister in the coming days.
Opposition leaders, including Marine Le Pen, called for snap elections, while Macron’s party urged for national consensus. Bayrou’s €44 billion austerity plan, aimed at cutting spending and reducing benefits, faced strong resistance.
This marks the first time since 1958 that a French government has collapsed after failing a confidence vote.
