Tensions in EU Parliament Over Silence for Charlie Kirk

A bid to hold a minute of silence in the European Parliament for slain US activist Charlie Kirk sparked tensions. Right-wing MEP Charlie Weimers requested the tribute during his speech, but Vice President Katarina Barley blocked it, citing rules that such requests must come from a political group at the opening of a session.

Right-wing members reacted by banging on desks and shouting in protest. The parliament’s spokesperson said a formal request could be made for October’s session. Kirk, a close ally of US President Donald Trump, was assassinated in Utah earlier this week.
