Erzincan Wetlands Host Hundreds of Migratory Birds

In Erzincan, Türkiye, the Ekşisu Marshes—declared a “wetland of national importance” 18 years ago—serve as a key stopover for nearly 300 bird species migrating between Africa and Asia. The marshes host cranes, storks, pelicans, geese, and other species, with some, like cranes, now staying year-round due to the favorable climate.

The wetlands also shelter 52 reptile and mammal species and 149 bird species, providing safe breeding and feeding grounds. Türkiye’s Nature Conservation and National Parks teams continue to monitor the migration patterns of soaring birds in the region.
