Turkish Speaker in Hungary: Türkiye’s EU Membership Would Strengthen Europe

Speaker of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Numan Kurtulmuş, met with Hungarian Parliament Speaker László Kövér in Budapest and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Interparliamentary Cooperation.

Kurtulmuş stressed that Türkiye’s full EU membership would “contribute more to Europe’s institutional identity than to Türkiye itself,” highlighting Ankara’s role as both Eastern and European. He also warned that global tensions, from the Russia-Ukraine war to Israel’s actions in Gaza, could trigger new conflicts if not addressed, calling it humanity’s shared responsibility to act for peace.

Kurtulmuş described Türkiye-Hungary relations as “exemplary” and “excellent,” noting strengthened cooperation in defense, energy, tourism, education, and culture. He also invited Kövér to Istanbul for the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union General Assembly next April.
