The remains of 118 soldiers killed in the 1980–1988 First Gulf War were exchanged between Iraq and Iran at a ceremony held at the Shalamjah Border Crossing in Basra province.
Iraq handed over 48 remains, while Iran returned 70. The exchanges, conducted under the Geneva Conventions and overseen by the International Committee of the Red Cross, are part of ongoing humanitarian efforts. The war claimed an estimated 1 million lives and cost both nations over $1 trillion.
