Hurricane Melissa has killed 34 people across the Caribbean—25 in Haiti, 8 in Jamaica, and 1 in the Dominican Republic. Floods in Haiti’s Petit-Goave region left 12 missing and forced 12,000 people into shelters.
The Category 5 storm hit Jamaica with winds of 295 km/h before weakening to Category 2 as it reached the Bahamas. Authorities in Cuba, where no deaths were reported, warned of severe damage and continuing heavy rains.
