At least 23 people have been killed in anti-government protests in Douala, Cameroon, according to the civil society group Stand Up for Cameroon. The group said security forces opened fire on unarmed civilians and used excessive force during demonstrations sparked by disputed election results.
The unrest followed the Constitutional Council’s declaration of President Paul Biya as the winner of the October 12 election, rejecting opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary’s victory claim. Bakary called for continued peaceful protests, vowing to “resist until we achieve our final victory.” The government has not yet commented on the deaths.
