Hurricane Melissa has left at least 50 people dead across the Caribbean. Haiti reported 30 deaths, 20 injuries, and 20 missing, mostly from flooding in Petit-Goave. In Jamaica, 19 people were killed as the storm tore through the island, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.
The hurricane, one of the region’s strongest in recent history, hit Jamaica with 295 km/h (185 mph) winds before weakening as it moved over Cuba and the Bahamas. Total damage is estimated at up to $52 billion.
