Sarajevo Mother Demands Justice for Foreign “Sniper Tourists”

Sarajevo mother Dženana Sokolović, who lost her unborn child and 7-year-old son Nermin Divović to a sniper shot in 1994, has condemned foreigners who allegedly paid Serb forces to shoot civilians for entertainment during the Bosnian War.

Speaking near the spot where she was shot on what became known as “Sniper Tourism,” Sokolović said a single bullet passed through her abdomen and then killed her son. “They killed my innocent child,” she said, adding that those who came from Western countries to shoot civilians “should never see the light of day” and must be brought to justice.

Her remarks come as Italian prosecutors investigate claims that foreigners, including Italians, Americans, Canadians, and Russians, joined paid “war tourism” sniper attacks in besieged Sarajevo, where 11,541 people, including 1,601 children, were killed during the 1992–95 siege.
