Indonesia Raises Semeru Volcano to Highest Alert Level After Eruption

Indonesia’s Semeru Volcano in East Java erupted, sending ash 2,000 meters into the air and triggering pyroclastic flows down its slopes. Authorities raised the alert level to its highest tier and warned residents to stay at least 8 kilometers from the crater.

Semeru, standing 3,676 meters high, is among roughly 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia.
