Israel carried out an airstrike south of Beirut, targeting Hezbollah’s second-in-command, Haitham Ali Tabatabai, in its first strike on the Lebanese capital since July. Hezbollah later confirmed Tabatabai’s death.
Israel said Tabatabai oversaw the group’s military buildup, adding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the strike. A senior U.S. official said Washington was not informed in advance. The scale of damage from the attack has not yet been disclosed.
