Ethiopia’s Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts After 12,000 Years

The Hayli Gubbi Volcano in northeastern Ethiopia’s Afar region has erupted for the first time in roughly 12,000 years. No casualties or structural damage were reported, though several villages were covered in ash. Authorities said the ash and smoke plume is drifting toward Yemen, Oman, India, and Pakistan. The Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program noted that no eruptions were previously recorded at Hayli Gubbi during the Holocene Epoch.
