Australia Announces Gun Buyback After Sydney Attack

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a national gun buyback program after a mass shooting in Sydney killed 15 people. Speaking in Canberra, Albanese said surplus illegal and newly banned firearms will be purchased and destroyed, warning that existing licensing laws allowed the attacker to legally own six guns. The shooting at Bondi Beach was the deadliest in Australia since the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, which led to sweeping gun law reforms. Authorities said around four million firearms are currently registered nationwide.
