Nearly four and a half years after the deadly 2021 floods in Germany, reconstruction remains unfinished in the Ahrweiler district of the Ahr Valley, one of the hardest-hit areas. Local reports show that about 36 percent of affected residents are still unable to return home, while nearly one-third of private houses remain incomplete despite major progress in public infrastructure.
The floods killed around 200 people nationwide, including 135 along the Ahr River, and destroyed or severely damaged nearly 9,000 buildings. Slow reconstruction, complex aid procedures, and delayed rebuilding of railways and bridges continue to disrupt daily life and fuel criticism over Germany’s disaster recovery system.
